Good Soy, Bad Soy

 When I first moved into the college dorms, one of my favorite meals was Special K (with those freeze-dried "berries") floating in tan-colored soy milk. It was healthy and I thought it tasted pretty good. Looking back I shudder because it was quite clearly the culprit in many of the stomach issues I had, as it was rich in the dreaded Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols (FODMAPS). 

Once I realized that soymilk was one of the major causes of the bloating and other fun stuff I struggled with, I never bought soy milk again. 


 I was poking around papers citing this paper that showed an association between soy intake and low sperm concentrations. Two reviews popped out.

Zen Habits: stupid about soy

Isn't it cute when scientifically ignorant people accuse other people of being scientifically ignorant? You know they are scientifically ignorant because they blather on about "peer reviewed research" while obviously never having read any.

I don't know when or why I subscribed to the mindless platitude drivel blog Zen Habits, but their recent post about soy caught my eye.

Soy: Playing with poisons

Earlier on Twitter I circulated an interesting recent paper a commenter pointed me to- Hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction associated with soy product consumption. The paper documents the case of a 19 year old who had type 1 diabetes, but no other health problems. After starting a vegan diet he experienced alarming erectile dysfunction and general loss of libido. Upon examination, low testosterone levels were found.


 It's funny because when I started reading Fanatic Cook I was vegan and she was a low-carber. I thought she was wrong, but just liked reading her stuff (I read a bunch of vegan blogs still). Now she is a nutritarian and I'm the carnivore. Most of the time I think she is missing the bigger picture, but she picks up interesting articles.

What is the most common non-paleo indulgence? In my experience, it seems beer is the vice of choice. Don't get me wrong- I love beer and it was one of the hardest things to give up, especially since craft beer was one of my big hobbies in college. But in the end, I did notice that the effects of it on my digestive health were very negative. But there is something else about beer.

It's funny because no paleo dude would be caught dead with a carton of soy milk or a tofutti cutie, partially out of fear of soy phytoestrogen.
