Coconut Water Wars
The new Zico coconut water in plastic bottles (yuck) is from concentrate. I like to occasionally get my potassium fix from coconut water, but I think it's too bad that companies are ruining a nice naturally sweet product. It's a testament to America's demented taste buds that nearly every naturally sweet product like juice or coconut water has to be sweetened even more for mass-market appeal.
Avoid Zico and go for Vita-Coco instead. Or even better, a nice fresh thai coconut.

I am completely obsessed with Vita Coco..the flavor, the health benefits you name it. I felt almost betrayed when I found out that Zico is made from concentrate...who do they think they are?
Tetra is not as great as they
Tetra is not as great as they let on and plastic is just ....wrong. Go for Amy & Brian its in a can but you know what? When your are done I know what to do with the can! Recycle it!! Oh yeah and what does it return as ...a can. The best is the yellow can with lime...put the lime in the coconut call the doc woke him up and said...doctor...got to quit this belly aching.

I completely agree! Zico is a no-go for me. To be honest, I was never really a fan of Zico, and now that they made these changes I'm definitely not going to buy their coconut water. Melissa is so right, Vita Coco is the way to go. It blows every other brand right out of the park!

Are Tetra Paks really safer or better than #1 or #2 plastic? What's inside them anyway, plastic?

I am a former Zico loyal
I am a former Zico loyal customer. I am no longer. The bottled Zico is undrinkably BAD.
I've switched to organic coconut water from Nature Factor. Tastes wonderful (imo, better than Zico and O.N.E.). I've tried about half a dozen plus coconut waters, both sweetened and unsweetened over the years, as well as having grown up drinking the stuff out of the coconut, fresh, chilled. I love the stuff. O.N.E. is fine (I have some in my fridge and was my backup when Zico ran out). VitaCoco is not so great. Nature Factor is terrific. I ordered 3 cases from amazon.
I'll have to add juices to the bottled Zico I purchased to make it palatable. Stuff sucks major hiney.

I think that O.N.E. is the best tasting coconut water out there. Vita Coco tastes like dirty water and they're not as transparent about where the coconuts come from, or what they do with their cash. O.N.E. not only supports and donates money but also seems to aim towards adults....I get nervous about coconut water in a can, isn't that illegal in the US? How do they get away with that?

But why would a can be illegal? Cans are recyclable and we have sodas and juices and soups in cans in the US. Why not cw?
I love a couple brands of canned coconut water...somehow, maybe cause CW is not acidic likek orange or grapefruit juice, the can doesn't permeate the flavor.
I like tetra paks, but some folks have commented that recycling centers don't know how to handle them, which is, I suppose, one reason Zico went all-recyclable bottles/caps. I like teh bottle/caps, but the new formulation of Zico cancels out the good they did with the bottle.

You know you can be both "From Concentrate" and "All Natural"
Take a look at the labels on other "Natural" products like POM Wonderful, Sambazon and Minute Maid-- just to name a few.
And the box-like packaging is actually harder to recycle than the #2 bottle of Zico at least in my hometown.
Out of curiosity, what's
Out of curiosity, what's wrong with concentrate? The old wives' tale is that it causes problems with taste and/or nutrition and I don't see either with the new ZICO. Plus last I checked, almost every OJ but Tropicana is from concentrate, as are all POM Wonderful and Sambazon drinks (which i personally love). If ZICO tastes good and has the same or better nutrition, I guess I don't see the big deal.

I just discovered your blog, it's really fantastic. I read recently that basically all thai coconuts we get here have been irradiated. I was very disappointed to hear this, do you know anything about that?

From what I know from my food law coursework (though it's been a few years now), irradiated foods must be labeled as such. The concern with Thai coconuts was that they had been dipped in preservative and considering that many chemicals we consider toxic in the US are legal there...it is a concern and why I have reduced my consumption of coconut products.

I tried the new zico. I don't see any added sugar??? I think it's actually less sugar than their other stuff. Tastes more like thai coconuts i buy in whole foods.
