Why Don't You Get One? : AWESOME CHEST FREEZERS
When I lived in Sweden I was placed in a house with 7 Swedish people. We had one freezer with six shelves and because I was last, I didn't get a shelf and had to negotiate space with people I would charitably describe as antisocial. Yeah. Also, Swedish people seem to like freezing things. Berries, mushrooms, apple sauce, game meat, meatballs, potatoes...all in the freezer. There was no room left. Finally one of the roommates moved out and I claimed my shelf. But the girl who moved in was not going to stand for the injustice of not having any room for her lingonberry harvest. We noticed the other houses had gotten chest freezers, so we got two of them. Soon they were completely full.
Why? They are just useful. In a place where grocery shopping meant biking over a mile, often in the cold and dark, being able to store things was a huge boon. Now in New York city, where grocery shopping is also a pain in the ass, I'm very happy to have one. I don't go to the grocery store very often anymore.
In fact, if you don't have one, you are foolish. I bet you think you don't have room, but you do. You can use it as a table or put shelves over it, it doesn't take up that much room. I live in a tiny apartment like everyone else in NYC and use mine as a bedroom table. If your roommates are supportive you can just use as a table in the common room.
Here is the one I have. It was less than $200 and I got free shipping. Energy bills? It's only $24 dollars a year!

You'll definitely earn it back too, because buying in bulk is the best way to get good grassfed local meat. Buying 5 lbs of meat is silly. Get a whole lamb. You'll pay less and get to try some really good cuts.
Most of this is in my own self-interest. With the Meatshare I run I'm going to have to stop offering shares of less than 30 lbs because it's not efficient for myself or the farmers. Besides, if you are really doing paleo, 5 lbs of meat is only going to last a day or so. And while frozen meat has a bad reputation in some circles, the trust is that quality varies by the freezing method and if it's frozen correctly you shouldn't have a lot of water loss and the quality should be really high.
So get one of these. Do it now! You'd be surprised how many people want to use mine: for horsemeat, for lambskins for tanning, for chickens. Sorry, y'all, there is no reason not to have one yourself.

Look, even John Durant has one, and it was featured in the NYtimes! His is smaller than mine unfortunately :( Unfortunately because he can't store stuff for me haha. Maybe I should get another one too :)
Funny story, but when that article was being written I hadn't been to John's apartment before. When the reporter was interviewing me he told me that John had his own meat locker. I kept imagining a real meat locker in a room in his apartment with carcasses hanging from butchering hooks. Haha.

Is the $24 a year you quoted
Is the $24 a year you quoted what the manufacturer said the electric bill would cost? I find that many electronics I buy estimate the cost/year based on low electric costs, for example .02 a kilowatt. I find that being in Los Angeles, with taxes and fees and fuel surcharges on top of a base rate of around .07 kilowatt, my electric cost is at least .20 a kilowatt, maybe even more. I'm curious if this is the same in NYC and surrounding areas?

Someone linked to this on a forum I read - I love it. Always thought they were more expensive and used more power than that. I've already talked my wife into getting one for our apartment.
Thanks for the info. I had
Thanks for the info. I had assumed that these were way more expensive. I'm getting one this weekend!
We finally bought a chest
We finally bought a chest freezer in May of this year that's exactly the same model as yours. We both love it and it was the best investment we've made in a household item in some time. Our apartment isn't huge, so it's a perfect size for our family. We're reaping the rewards of buying in bulk and love not going to the stores so often.

I have a chest freezer in the garage, plus the usual fridge/freezer in the kitchen. You can't live in the country in New Zealand without at least one freezer.
If you can keep your chest
If you can keep your chest freezers in an unheated space, you save a lot of money in the winter! Sadly it doesn't work for refrigerators. When it gets below freezing, the freezer compartment thaws out, and everything in the `frig' compartment freezes. :(
You don't appreciate your
You don't appreciate your freezer(s) until you move away from home and no longer have 2 large chest freezers to store all the goodies you buy/find/harvest.
No way! I have at this very
No way!
I have at this very moment a 7 cu ft for $198 that I got just this morning at Home Depot. Was on my list since we moved from loft to house with a garage.
Got up this AM, decided this was the day and headed off to Home Depot.
Must have ESP you were going to post this.
My family has a full sized
My family has a full sized stand along freezer, as well as 2 fridges with freezer space, but I was starting to get worried about where to put my upcoming excess of meat... Then I found a 14.3 Cubic foot chest freezer on freecycle and was somehow the the first person to ask for it... Yahoo! (It's not just the Swedes that have a penchant for freezing things- ours are full of berries, nuts, sauces, soups, purees, and, of course, meat). Currently we've got a bunch of almost expired bread a friend gave us that's packed away in there too... I won't touch it, but our chickens love it!
You know who else had a meat
You know who else had a meat locker in their apartment... Dexter's serial killer brother from season 1 of Dexter.
If you're like me, a chest
If you're like me, a chest freezer is a nightmare. Im one of those people that 'out of sight, out of mind' is the norm, so I tend to get lots of stuff lost at the bottom of a chest freezer.
I have a stand-up freezer, like the one you had to share in Sweden...it may cost a bit more, but I've had the thing for years now.
My meats are organized by shelf, so nothing gets 'lost' in there...frozen soups and sauces go in the door.
Freezers Rock!!
I just have a normal
I just have a normal top-of-fridge freezer, but I keep a list taped to the front that says "What's in Here". It helps a lot!

Ah yeah, that's why I have a spreadsheet called "In freezer" so I don't get so many surprises. Although yesterday I discovered some pork chops I didn't know I had.
Sorry Melissa. We started
Sorry Melissa. We started with a 7 cu. ft. just like you. You're going to regret the small size. You can barely fit 1/2 a steer in there!
We just got a 15 cu ft. model and are absolutely in love with it. I always have room for some reason, not for lack of trying. Guess I'm like the Swedes.
By 1/2 a steer I meant 1/4.
By 1/2 a steer I meant 1/4. By 15 cu. ft. I meant 17. Sheesh.
In spite of that the world was made more awesome with the invention of the chest freezer.
Yep! We've got two and
Yep! We've got two and picking up our third tomorrow morning. :) Next up, a generator... lol
But seriously, that's 1/2 a steer, 8 chickens, 2 turkeys, a whole whack of lamb, and I've 1/2 pig on the way next month.
I'm a happy girl!
